TD122 Beginning Wheelthrowing

Learn to center, open, and compress clay and throw small cylinders on the potter’s wheel. Trimming, finishing, adding handles, feet, and spouts makes pieces ready to glaze and fire.

TD172 Handbuilding Like the Ancients

Over 10,000 years ago humans started using clay to create. Jugs, bowls, baskets, platters, teapots, jewelry, tablets, statues, tiles, buildings―these have all been born from clay, a legacy of civilization. Use traditional coil, pinch and slab techniques to continue that legacy, creating vessels which harken back to ancient times. Suitable for all levels.

TD174 Handbuilding w/Found Objects

Thursday, 1:30–4:00 p.m. Studio 4
Fall I (6 weeks) starts Aug. 26; Fall II (8 weeks) starts Oct. 28. This class will use the basic handbuilding techniques of coil, pinch and slab to create ceramic vessels that evoke visual memories through the use of found objects. We will give new life to objects as they inspire form, texture and glazing choices in items for everyday use.

TD221 Intermediate Ceramics

Designed to build on skills acquired in earlier classes. Demonstrations and instruction in more advanced handbuilt and wheel-thrown forms are provided, including expanded glazing techniques. Prereq: Handbuilding, Beginning Wheelthrowing or Continuing Wheelthrowing.

TD321 Advanced Ceramics

An excellent choice for those seeking a continuation of skills learned and to develop a personal style and consistency. Learn fabrication methods to design and create wearable jewelry in copper, brass, and silver. Processes include filigree, stone setting, soldering, filing, embossing, coloring, and polishing.

Students will work from a live model creating studies in clay. Short and long poses will be used during the classes. All works will be fired at the end of the session. Clay will be available in class.

TD179 Basic Moldmaking for Sculptors

Come to class with ideas for molds you always wanted to make and learn the basics of mold making. Emphasis is on rubber latex, plaster, alginate and several experimental techniqus. Students will be responsible for materials.

TD177 Traditions in Textile CANCELLED

Tuesday, 10:00 a.m.–12:00 Heritage Center
Study old textile techniques developed in Asia; traditional stitches will be taught to create modern design. Hand spinning will give students a chance to make unique thread samples. Learn how Korean wrapping cloth is made. Triple stitch and traditional starching will be explained. Basic sewing skills needed.

TD178 Paper Making CANCELLED

Thursday, 10:00 a.m.–12:00 noon Studio 1B
Learn the basics of papermaking: make pulp from recycled paper with onionskins, rose petals, clover, sewing scraps, etc. Mold and deckle will be used to make unique paper. Collage and basic bookbinding will be taught. Make your own book or cards and envelopes. No experience is required; just imagination and a creative mind.
