this is a painting techniques class for learning and practicing alla prima oil painting skills relative to the subject of birds, boats, and their reflections. Using instructor provided photographs for the first few classes, you will develop color studies from your drawings/value studies. This skill lab will cover some techniques for adjusting value, intensity and temperature of color in reflections, ways to manage edges. Some concepts of design and composition will be explored relative to building paintings from studies and photo references. Students will do studies based on their photographs for the remaining classes. Significant drawing and oil painting experience is required.

Learn the fundamentals of the most important art form: drawing. Our goal is to draw realistically and train our eyes to capture what is in front of us. We will see how light and shadow creates form, practice subtle transitions in shading, use of proportions, angles, and more. In each class, students will paint from direct observation a new still-life arrangement of fresh-cut flowers, small fruits or vegetables, and a bowl. the instructor will do a brief demo and discuss composition, color, light, and shadows, edges, and other aspects of good painting, working with each student offering suggestions for improvement. The instructor will supply flowers, fruit, and other still-life objects. Open to students with intermediate experience using oils, acrylics, or pastels.

Students will learn basic techniques of the alla prima (direct) method of applying oil paint. In addition to paint application and brushwork, students will learn how to mix color using a split-primary palette. Working from still life setups, students will complete one study each week to explore techniques for rendering glass, ceramic, metal, and organic objects. Instruction will focus on teaching students to see and copy value and intensity changes in color. There will be demonstrations of techniques, along with discussions about methods, materials and supplies used in oil painting. Supply list will be emailed to students upon registration. Learn to use your sketchbook as a visual diary, recording every day people, places, and events. After the first session in the Crealde classroom we will immediately move towards sketching at various venues around Central Florida. You will learn how to incorporate storytelling into your sketches in our location sessions. Your sketchbook will be used the way a photojournalist uses a camera. When you sit still and sketch in this fast paced world some drama unfolds. The goal is to catch that drama one sketch at a time. the six-week goal is to produce finished sketches in each class using pencil, pen, and watercolor within two hours.
