Oil pastel allows you to blend colors and work with effects similar to paintings, but with the practical approach of a crayon. Working from photos, learn how to prepare surfaces, design compositions, and use various oil pastel techniques to blend, layer, scrape, and soften this material into amazing works of art.

Required Supplies

Please wait to purchase your own materials AFTER THE FIRST CLASS when I will explain more about them.

Oil pastels look like crayons but are quite different. They are not waxy but creamy, using oil as the main binder allowing for beautiful blending, rich colors and smoother surfaces, similar to painting. There are softer oil pastels and firmer oils pastels with different binders and pigments which can affect their blending ability.

Pastel Paper Pad 11x14 (Watercolor, Bristol paper, or illustration board can also be used if primed with gesso first)
Oil pastel set with minimum 12 colors
Gesso (optional – ONLY if not using Pastel Paper)
½” flat brush
Paper blending stumps, a few toothpicks and cotton swabs
Painting metal spatula for scraping (optional)
