James Baldwin Book Club
Together with the Hannibal Square Heritage Center and Holocaust Memorial Resource & Education Center, Winter Park Public Library announces the organizations’ next annual James Baldwin Book Club series with monthly discussions and film screenings of notable works about the African American experience. The six-month series began on September 9 and will take place each second Sunday 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. through March 10, 2019.
The 2018 – 2019 James Baldwin Book Club series schedule includes:
- Septempter 9, 2018: Born A Crime, by Trevor Noah
- October 14, 2018: Just Mercy, by Bryan Stevenson
- November 11, 2018: A Wrinkle in Time, Director Ava DuVernay
- January 13, 2019: Barracoon: The Story of the Last ‘Black Cargo’ by Zora Neale Hurston
- February 10, 2019: Double Victory: The Tuskegee Airmen at War, narrated by Cuba Gooding, Jr.
- March 10, 2019: Becoming A Black Woman by Dr. Ruth D. Edwards*
- Dr. Edwards’ book is available for purchase at Hannibal Square Heritage Center.
“Inspired by James Baldwin’s legacy as one of American’s leading writers about race and democracy, the series invites engagement in the works of some of the most important voices about equality in literature and film,” said Dr. Ruth Edwards, Director of Education for the Winter Park Public Library.
The series’ book discussions will take place at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center, 642 W New England Ave, Winter Park, Fla., and films will be screened at the Winter Park Public Library, 460 E. New England Avenue, Winter Park, Fla. and Holocaust Memorial Resource & Education Center, 851 N Maitland Ave, Maitland, Fla.
